5th July 2013 - A Visit from the RHS and The Children's Foundation

Today we had a visit from The RHS and The Childrens Foundation, who came to visit our school to see what we have managed to do with our school garden so far.

Our Tomatoes growing in our new mini greenhouse which was given to us by the parent of a member of staff

Some of our seedlings - Swede, Turnip and Cabbage

Peas growing inside donated tyres

Potatoes growing in our type 'pots'

Visit to NEOG - North East Organic Growers - Bomarsund, which is North of Tynemouth
Earlier this month we visited NEOG to find out a bit about Polytunnels, we bought one last year which will be put up at school in the spring once some of the portacabin classrooms have been demolished.

We found out about using weed barrier to cut down on a bit of hard work.  We also found out about irrigating the polytunnel, which will save a bit of time and effort especially in the summer holidays.

Peas growing in the polytunnel.

Beans

Each of the polytunnels at NEOG has a small pond to encourage frogs and toads, which will eat some of the pests which can damage crops.  This is comfrey in the background and another plant which encourages bees to come into the polytunnel.

In the foreground there are some onions we helped to weed, in the background there is a tractor planting out some veggies.
