Today we decided that it was time to remove the green manure crop that we planted in the wild flower bed. We did not dig it in earlier in the year as the instructions advised us to as there were so many bees on the flowers. It had started to die back and the heavy rain that we experienced yesterday had flattened the flowers and it was looking rather messy.
We pulled the flowers up and dug out the roots
Purple sprouting broccoli and kale, planted where we had our garlic and onions. We covered the small plants with a net to try to protect them from butterflies.
Cucumbers growing in the poly-tunnel.
Gherkins
Aubergine
Sweet peppers
Tomatoes
Some newly sown seeds to be started off for later in the year.
Butternut squash which we may have planted a bit too closely together?
Our first tomato ripening.
Chili peppers
Our cucumber patch is getting filled up.
The wildflowers have started to flower underneath the orchard trees.
Sweetcorn
Our wildflower bed in front of our building is looking fantastic at the moment, it is a mass of poppies, cornflowers, sweetpeas and other flowers I cannot name?
Preparing the asparagus bed, adding some sharp sand to improve the drainage.
The instructions said to soak the plants in water for a few hours before planting.
Digging a trench in our raised bed.
Laying out and looking at the plants
Measuring the spaces between the plants - the instructions say 45cms between the plants.
Putting the plants into the trench.
We thought the plants were rather strange to look at, but look forward to seeing how they actually grow. It is a bit of an investment as we will not be able to harvest any asparagus spears for 3 years.
