Halloween Pumpkins

Another picture of our pumpkins we grew in the garden this year.

23rd October was a very wet day, so we had to find activities to do inside for our morning with the RHS. We decided to carve our pumpkins for Halloween.

We found that a good way of carving out some of the features of the faces was to use our new drill - under strict supervision of course!

We used one of the smaller pumpkins to put inside the largest pumpkins mouth.

Carving using a knife this time - again under supervision.

We talked about why our pumpkins were more yellow than orange - apparently they need some time to ripen, then they turn from green to orange or in our case from yellow to orange.  We had put the pumpkins in the greenhouse for a few days, but it was not warm enough to encourage them to turn colour.  We know this for next year now.

Carving the teeth using a knife.  We have saved some of the seed from inside the pumpkins to plant next year.  We scooped the seed out and rinsed it under the tap to remove the pumpkin flesh, then we have left it to dry.  We will store it in a dark dry place until next spring.

A finished pumpkin, all ready for Halloween

Back from the half-term holiday - our over-wintering onions and garlic are coming up nicely.
