16th May - Putting the plastic on the Poly-tunnel

Today our friends from the Shiremoor Allotment Association arrived to fit the plastic cover to our poly-tunnel.  It has been fantastic having such great help from people who really know what they are doing.  Our students have enjoyed having visitors to our garden and have learnt a lot from them.

Here is our roll of plastic to cover the poly-tunnel.  We were advised to put it somewhere nice and warm so that it was ready for fitting.  Thanks to the person who has had it on their office windowsill for the past couple of days!

The roll of plastic was put on top of the frame - someone came up with the great idea of putting a brush handle inside the roll to make it easier to unroll across the roof.

Rolling the plastic film out down the length of the frame.

Deciding which side to unroll first.

We had plenty of helpers in the garden today.

Unrolling the plastic film down to the ground.

Unrolling the cover on the other side - we were a bit apprehensive that the cover was not big enough - but we had nothing to worry about the cover was huge and needed a bit of trimming.

Stretching the plastic over the ends.

Stretching the sides and attaching them to the base.

The weather today was perfect for putting the cover on, lovely and warm with little wind - although the odd gust of wind required the students to help weighting the cover down with their feet.
Here is the poly-tunnel as we left it for the weekend.
